One of the reasons we, at Exterior Remodel & Design, love doing roofing in Omaha is because the city is filled with people who are doing good deeds. It’s all the little things that make this such a great community to be a part of. So when we see or hear of someone doing a great deed we can’t help but say thank you for making our home awesome. Check this story about how Joey Wolfe, a team member at the Hope Center for Kids Omaha saves a squirrel. The video is worth a watch too!

In the northern part of our state is a small town with a population of just under 3,000 but in February this small town will get 40,000-50,000 pieces of mail sent through it’s post office. That town is Valentine, NE. All of the mail is, of course, Valentines cards, wedding invitations, and other love notes that the town will stamp with special valentine hearts. We at Exterior Remodel & Design want to wish all of you a Happy Valentine’s Day and check out more about this awesome Nebraska tradition below.

Original Post over here: ACE Students are the Future of Omaha Roofing via Tumblr ACE Students are the Future of Omaha Roofing Along with the beautiful temperatures of spring and summer in Nebraska comes severe thunderstorms capable of causing damage to your home. As many homeowners in Omaha and Lincoln have already discovered this year, hail can wreak havoc on your home’s roof in a matter of minutes. We experienced some large hail recently, but it doesn’t always take golf ball-sized hail to damage the shingles on your roof. Even smaller hail can accelerate granule loss and lead to increased problems over time. With the bulk of summer still ahead of us, there could be even more severe weather and hail potential on the way. That’s why it’s good to get quality roof work done as soon as possible. If you sustained hail damage from recent storms and need to get your roof repaired, now is the time to act. Although hail damage can sometimes take a while to threaten the structural integrity of your roof, insurance will often have a statute of limitations on claims so you don’t want to delay. Because hail damage typically can shorten a roof’s lifespan by several years, a damaged roof could end up causing structural damage in the not-so-distant future. That means that your roof that should have lasted 20 years may only last about five or ten years after sustaining hail damage. Without proper coverage, your roof won’t have the protection it needs from the elements. Nebraska weather can be pretty harsh in the summer. With the hot, humid weather in July and occasional thunderstorms, your roof can take a beating. And if rainwater soaks into your rafters, it can cause structural problems that will leave a huge hole in your wallet. Our roofers at Exterior Remodel and Design have inspected plenty of roofs throughout their careers and are highly skilled at spotting hail damage to shingles of any type. Of course, you should always have an adjuster from your insurance company inspect your roof, as getting a second opinion can be incredibly valuable. If needed, our roofers will be happy to do a re-inspection with the insurance adjuster to determine the extent of the damages. So if your house is caught in the crossfire of a Nebraska hailstorm, make sure you get your roof inspected for damage as soon as possible afterward. You may not need to get your roof replaced right away, but you need to act quickly in order to get your insurance adjusted. When you do need your roof replaced or repaired, the high-quality roofers at Exterior Remodel and Design will make sure your new roof will last for years to come. First Seen on: Repairing a Hail Damaged Roof via Tumblr Repairing a Hail Damaged Roof You might not know this about us, but there is one season that we, at Exterior Remodel & Design, look forward to above all of the rest. It’s Girl Scout Cookie season! When we’re not busy working on gutters, climbing onto roofs, or replacing windows, we are devouring the delicious Thin Mints, Tagalongs, and Samoas. Those sweet, cylindrical morsels give us sustenance during a long workday and our cupboards are nearly depleted. So we can’t wait to stock up again. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Omaha Girl Scout Hanna Van Cleave, 11, is going into this year’s sales with a goal: to beat the Nebraska sales record and sell 5,500 boxes. Last year she held the state’s top sales spot after selling 4,502 boxes of cookies. During the first week of cookie sales in 2016 she sold 500 boxes just within her neighborhood. “She’s an incredibly confident seller,” said Hanna’s mother, Katina Van Cleave. “She’s more comfortable with talking to people, her teachers and other adults, so it’s definitely a skill she has built up in her life. Not just in cookie sales.” Katina, who in her youth was also a Girl Scout, said social media is beneficial but doesn’t have the same impact as selling at booths and door to door. “People want to interact with the girls, they want to see the Scout out there doing it,” Katina said. We will be stopping by the booths to fill up our pantries and to help Hanna Van Cleave set a new record and we hope that you will too! Check out the full story here. Depending on your needs you may want to use different materials for your roof. There are pros and cons to all of the standard materials. It can affect the cost, weight, and how it is installed. I just found a handy guide from Bob Vila that breaks down some of the different roofing products that can be used. Asphalt Shingle. This is the most commonly used of all roof materials, probably because it’s the least expensive and requires a minimum of skill to install. It’s made of a fiberglass medium that’s been impregnated with asphalt and then given a surface of sand-like granules. Two basic configurations are sold: the standard single-thickness variety and thicker, laminated products. The standard type costs roughly half as much, but laminated shingles have an appealing textured appearance and last roughly half as long (typically 25 years or more, versus 15 years plus). Prices begin at about $50 a square, but depending upon the type of shingle chosen and the installation, can cost many times that. Wood. Wood was the main choice for centuries, and it’s still a good option, though in some areas fire codes forbid its use. Usually made of cedar, redwood, or southern pine, shingles are sawn or split. They have a life expectancy in the 25-year range (like asphalt shingles) but cost an average of twice as much. Metal. Aluminum, steel, copper, copper-and-asphalt, and lead are all durable—and expensive—roofing surfaces. Lead and the copper/asphalt varieties are typically installed as shingles, but others are manufactured for seamed roofs consisting of vertical lengths of metal that are joined with solder. These roofs start at about $250 per square but often cost two or three times that. Tile and Cement. The half cylinders of tile roofing are common on Spanish Colonial and Mission styles; cement and some metal roofs imitate tile’s wavy effect. All are expensive, very durable, and tend to be very heavy. Slate. Slate is among the most durable of all roofing materials. Not all slate is the same—some comes from quarries in Vermont, some from Pennsylvania and other states—but the best of it will outlast the fasteners that hold it in place. Hundred-year-old slate, in fact, is often recycled for reinstallation, with the expectation it will last another century. But slate is expensive—typically prices start at about $800 a square—and very heavy. How To: Choose a New Roof for Your House first published on BobVilla.com Originally Posted here: Choosing The Right Roofing Product for Your Home via Tumblr Choosing The Right Roofing Product for Your Home There are few parts of a house that are more important than the roof. It’s your first line of defense against any type of weather, and a solid roof will give your home years of protection. Because of this, one of the most important questions a homeowner can ask about their home is, “How long will my roof last?”
There are many things you need to know about your roof in order to make sure your home is protected. You should know what type of material was used on your roof, when it was installed, and how to spot damage when it occurs (which usually involves contacting a professional). How Long Will Each Type of Roof Last? There are many types and styles of roofing available, and they all have different lifespans. In order to know how long your roof will last, the first thing you need to know is the type of roof you have. Asphalt ShinglesThe most common roofing material in the country is asphalt shingle roofing. Its lower price is one of the reasons why it has gained so much popularity, but because of that you should expect it to have a relatively shorter lifespan. Usually, you can expect an asphalt roof to remain in good shape for about 15 or 20 years, as long as you properly maintain it. That means that you fix minor damages before they become bigger problems and get it regularly inspected. Of course, every time heavy hail rolls through, the lifespan of your asphalt shingles will decrease. Metal RoofingMetal roofs come with a longer lifespan and a higher price tag. Most people think of metal roofs as being an odd look for a modern home, but the material has come a long way in the roofing industry and can come in many different looks. Metal roofs are remarkably low maintenance and can come with anywhere from a 20 to 40-year warranty, Many will last even longer than that. It’s a higher-priced roofing option, but it could ultimately last your entire lifetime. Wood ShinglesWood shingle and shake roofing is typically chosen as an aesthetic choice and can be very expensive. While all types of roofs require constant maintenance, wood roofs are prone to more problems than other roofing solutions. One of those issues is moisture, which can be very damaging to any type of wood. That’s why it’s important to clear any debris that may be trapping moisture on your wood roof so it doesn’t warp the shingles and cause more damage. When properly installed and maintained, a wood roof will last about 20 or 30 years. Tile and Slate RoofingTile roofing is especially popular in the south and western parts of the United States and can be extremely durable. Slate roofing isn’t very common due to its high cost, but they can be a great investment if you live in the right parts of the country. Cold weather is especially harsh on tile roofing, which is why they’re most commonly used in the south and west areas. Most tile roofing can last over 50 years, and if you invest in high-quality material, it could last over 100 years with minimal maintenance. By knowing what type of roof you have and when it was installed, you can easily figure out how much life it has left. If you aren’t sure when it was installed by previous owners, a roof inspection should tell you how much life your roof has remaining. Roof InspectionsMost types of roofing require some form of maintenance in order to fulfill a lengthy lifespan protecting your home. One of the best ways to ensure that your roof lasts as long as possible is to get frequent roof inspections from an expert. In most states where roof damage is common, a roof inspection is a requisite when buying or selling a home. It’s also important to note that snowfall can drastically decrease the lifespan of most roofs. A typical asphalt roof will only last about 5 to 10 years in the far north with lots of snow. Many storms can cause damage that isn’t noticeable to the untrained eye, so contacting an expert is crucial. By getting regular inspections, you can spot small problems before they become more serious, like a leaky roof that could lead to costly structural damage. Doing so will help give your roof a longer life and help protect your home from the elements. Exterior Remodel & Design offers free estimates to anyone with roof damage.
